HUMANITY

The Summer Letters – A Reflection by Sergio Bambaren

Are We Losing Our Humanity?

In the days that we are living in, there is a general “feeling” that our societies are losing its humanity. We are starting to live in a very complex world. A world where many of our values as humans are being shattered by the global problems that we are confronting: wars, technology, greediness, materialism, and many others. Not so long ago, people would gather around their neighbourhood and friends, looking for physical interaction that would create an atmosphere of happiness and feeling human.

Yet, we don’t talk to each other no more: we communicate through messages, texts, and other technological applications. The idea of humanity “losing” its defining qualities is a complex one, often linked to a perceived decline in compassion and ethical behavior.  Humanity’s core values are eroding.

Trapped Behind Screens

From my humble point of view, staring at screens all day has been pivotal in losing our humanity.

You can see it everywhere: airports, planes, trains, in schools, even in our own homes. Hours staring into a glass screen is an addiction of the 21st Century, and it’s only getting worst and worst.

Disconnected in a Hyperconnected World

Modern life, with its focus on technology and individualistic pursuits, has led to a decline in humanity and the ability to connect with others on a meaningful level. Individuals or groups are been treated as less than human, leading to a disregard for their well-being.

Also, an overemphasis on material possessions and social status has led to a neglect of human connection and ethical considerations. Even technology, which offers many benefits, has also contributed to social isolation, superficial interactions, and a decline in face-to-face communication. As a result of these factors, we see more and more people fighting psychological problems, such as anxiety and depression. Even kids and teenagers, are struggling to be happy and authentic, and as they grow, they will have a very difficult time in discovering their dreams, and finding the true purpose of their life.

A Way Back to Ourselves

Will we be able to recover our humanity? I think the answer is yes. We just need to get back to our roots as human beings: living a simple life where we hug more, talk more, and interact more; where spiritual matters will always be more important than material possessions. Turn your phone off for one day, and go to Nature. Trust me, you will never regret it!

A dreamer…

  1. Your words—especially the ending—deeply moved me and truly resonate within my heart. It really is that simple, as you say. We just need to do it. Let go of the noise of everyday life, spend conscious time in nature, and we will automatically reconnect with what makes us human at our core.
Thank you for this reminder and for your beautiful words.

    1. Yes, Jasmín, you are totally right. Turn your phone one day off, feel the freedom!🐬🐬🐬💙💙💙
